NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
.
Not a ton of stuff to empty your bank account for today, but there is still a lot and there is still much too much stuff that is being under read. I was in a meeting with a publisher until 3AM so I not only didn’t read any of yesterday’s books but this entire post is being written in a place between sleep and wake not dissimilar to the film Dark City. I think. Don’t really remember what happens in Dark City. Let’s begin.
.
SINGLE ISSUES
.
MULTIPLE WARHEADS #1. Brandon Graham is one of my favorite folks working in comics. His stuff is refreshing, kinetic, and gives you the feeling that you are seeing something you haven’t seen before. Which is ironic since this is a rerelease of a book ONI put out a few years ago. Still you should buy it.
.
DARK HORSE PRESENTS 17. Am I fucking crazy? Anthologies are awesome. Why does nobody buy them? You want something funny? You want something scary? You want something sad? You want something weird? It’s all in Dark Horse Presents and it’s all created by some of the top creators in the field. When aliens uncover the remains of our society in 400 years they are going to assume we were too stupid to survive because almost no one bought Dark Horse Presents.
.
GHOST 1. There is an alternate universe where Phil Noto draws every comic and that alternate universe makes this universe look stupid. All we have is this one comic Phil Noto drew this week. We suck.
.
HACK SLASH 19. I have never bought an issue of HACK SLASH before. Nothing against it, it just wasn’t my thing. My buddy Mike stepped in to write this standalone issue and the art is stunning. I proudly bought this issue because Mike is a great new voice in comics and a great guy. I am telling you to go buy this book based on the fact that he is a good person with talent. That should be enough. I also bet it’s awesome, but I haven’t read it yet.
.
ALL-STAR WESTERN 13. This is in the top 3 best books DC is publishing. As far as I can tell there is only one other ongoing western comic on shelves. If you don’t buy All-Star Western when you go to your local shop I actually literally think you are an asshole.
.
PROPHET 30. Prophet is beautiful and fun and maybe nonsense. I am not sure. 1 and 2 outweigh 3.
.
COLLECTIONS
.
CARTOON UTOPIA. If your local shop got this book you should do yourself a favor and crack it open. It is a beautiful assault on your senses. It’s like digging your face in his fur and taking a big whiff of the bear that is going to rip your head off. It’s fun, overwhelming, and soon you won’t have a head.
.
WALLY WOOD’S CAME THE DAWN. These are reprints of old Wally Wood EC stories and they are really amazing. Wally Wood’s art is like a fine wine. It is classy, makes you seem smart, gets better with age, but will still mess you up when you dive in. (I haven’t had a sip of wine since I was 12 but I am pretty sure that’s how fine wine works, right? My friends all drink it out of a box and throw up on each other.)
.
CORPSE OF THE IMJIN. Again, reprints of Harvey Kurtzman’s EC war comics. I peed a little when I saw how pretty this book was. Not “leave work early to change” pee but, ya know, a little.
.
FREAKANGELS Complete Collection. Warren Ellis is one of the smartest writers in comics. People love the hell out of this series. Avatar has just rereleased the whole thing in one box. Just buy it for some of the better comicness you will read this year. I am not going to lie and say I don’t wish they had made one big omnibus or at least made the collection cheaper. It is a hard price point on a set of essentially old stock, it would be hard to justify buying it if you didn’t already know you loved it, and how could you know that if you didn’t already own it, and if you already own it why would you buy it again? Well I am here to tell you that you do love it. Go buy it. Also some of you may have read it as a web comic. As my former child pastor Haley Joel Osment used to say, “It’s time to pay that shit forward.”
.
That’s it for stuff I got super excited about. You should go to your local shop (or use the link here to find a local shop) and see what excites you. Go buy a comic and feel like you supported underfunded arts so you can then do something else nice for yourself and trick yourself into a double treat day. I suggest a cupcake. Or a massage.
